Welcome, parents!

Welcome back to school! My name is Mr. Willett,
and I will be your child’s Math teacher this year. I am excited to work with
you and your child as a team throughout the year.
There is a saying that goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I couldn’t agree with this more. I know that my students learn the most when I work with parents as partners and team members. I like to communicate with parents fairly often about student progress, but always, always, always, know that you can reach out to me. Our Classroom Vision We will build a safe, supportive environment where participation and engagement are not only encouraged but desired. We will approach math with a sense of urgency to learn our entire 6th grade curriculum and begin the 7th grade curriculum, and we will pursue every problem no matter how difficult or challenging it may seem. Students, teachers, and families will all work together to make sure all students succeed in 6th grade math, and the result is all 6th grade students will be more prepared for 7th grade, high school, college, and, ultimately, their career. In order to make this happen, I want all students to aim for 80% or above on all tests, assignments, and final grades. Our class will focus on rigorous math content, as well as character building and a culture of achievement, that fosters a growth-mindset. In order to achieve this, students will have to observe the following Tribe community agreements and classroom expectations. Tribe Agreements -Appreciations. No put-downs. -The right to participate or pass. -Attentive Listening. -Mutual respect for self, others, and property. Classroom Expectations -Respect everyone and our class time. -Enter class prepared and on time. -Look, listen, and follow all directions. -Raise your hand to be recognized. -Never give up! Along with these ideals, it is also expected that no student get out of their seat without permission, no personal technology will be used in the classroom, and no food or drinks, other than water, will be in the classroom. My goal is to make learning the top priority in class where distractions are limited, and I also want to foster an environment where all students feel welcome and free to ask or answer any question without feeling like they don’t have a voice or will be mocked by their peers. Math can be very frustrating to learn, and it is my hope that an open, safe, supportive environment will help all students learn and understand math better this year. Homework Students will have homework almost every day. Constant practice help students retain the new material they learn every day, and that practice pays off. Homework is worth 25% of a student’s overall grade. Most assignments will be graded on completion, and a few will be graded on precision. I will send a parent letter at the beginning of each unit outlining everything we will be learning. My hope is that this will help you assist your child with their homework and understanding of the new things we are learning. Monitoring Your Child’s Progress & Grades I will post student grades in class by student ID number every 2-3 weeks. However, you and your child may monitor their progress online using Power Teacher Gradebook. I will provide more instructions regarding this in the next week. In addition, progress reports or a report card will be sent home with students every 5 weeks. Thank you for taking the time to read through this. I know it is a lot of information so please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. I can’t wait to see what we will accomplish this year! |
